NHS Commercial Solutions operates a category management approach to procurement, backed up by a robust sourcing methodology. We have a strategic overview of all NHS non-pay spend, allowing an unrivalled insight into collaborative procurement.

Through the category management process, we maximise sustainable and competitive advantage for our customers and provide support across corporate services; facilities, estates, IT, telecommunications, medical, surgical and pharmacy.

Contracts and supplier performance management is key, including the development of contract user networks. We support contract implementation and change programmes, and strive to deliver contracts which incentivise continuous improvement. This process has developed a secure and responsive supply base that provides goods and services that are of high quality, value for money, sustainable, flexible, use the latest technologies and are delivered to the right timescale.

In-depth procurement knowledge allows us to concentrate on market management, looking at trends and conditions in order to stimulate markets, influence market position, and engage with suppliers to ensure that markets reflect our customers’ requirements, both now and in the future. We manage category management planning groups within these markets for customers in order to maximise the advantages of scale and synergies.

Our cost efficiency initiatives include benchmarking current spends against the marketplace, spend analysis and strategic sourcing. We also work to identify and qualify suitable suppliers, negotiate best value and look at process/compliance improvement, including e-sourcing and Procure to Pay (P2P) solutions as appropriate.

We strive to ensure every element of our customers’ expenditure is strategically managed to achieve value for money in a sustainable way, and influence non-pay spend to improve cost control and savings delivery. We support those organisations with specific financial targets and encourage supplier innovation and continuous product and cost improvement.

Our approach follows the ‘once only’ principle, in-line with national strategy, to ensure that customers get best value for their total investment in procurement, whether local or in NHS Commercial Solutions.
